As I begin to embark on my NQT year as Newly Qualified Teacher there sure is a lot of pressure to get through it; but I find comfort in the fact that each day is a day closer to completing the year.

Given a slightly busier timetable than in my PGCE year, but of course reduced by 10% in comparison to a normal teacher’s timetable; I do feel as though it is the correct balance to be introduced into teaching (without the safety nets that the PGCE provided) to prepare for a career as a successful teacher.

The support is provided but I do keep dwelling on the fact that I am the newbie and you just cannot help thinking that you are the bottom of the pecking order (the kids know this too). However entering teaching at this period in time is not easy and if you get through it you can easily find yourself moving up the pecking order very quickly (if that’s where you want your teaching career to go).

The best approach I am finding to be very useful at this moment in time is to just take one day at a time. Don't think to far ahead as the thought of the long haul is slightly scary. So far I am trying to learn the importance of managing my time, knowing when to start a particular task and knowing how to prioritise is absolutely essential for a teacher.

The Pupils

The best thing I believe that a teacher can do to reach a child's heart (this includes parents too) is to actually listen to what they have to say. We are living in a society where listening, talking and family time is being fazed out. Children are spending to much time in there rooms on computers. We need to listen to what the pupils/children have to say when we get the opportunity to speak with them; not only that it gives us time to think of an educated response.
